8 Healthy Foods – Eight ‘B’ Foods to Include in Your Weekly Meal Plans

February 28th, 2011

If you have a choice (and availability) – your food is preferably of organic origin (certified). And your poultry/meats are ideally grass fed, free range, etc… If not, just do the best you can to incorporate organic versions of not just the following – but all of the foods (and beverages) you consume as part of your regular diet.

1 – Bananas
This is one of my all time favorites – and I eat one every day. Bananas are a great source of magnesium (good for your bones and heart health) – and they are loaded with potassium (about 400 milligrams in a medium one). This is good since we are supposed to get close to 5,000 milligrams of potassium per day. Remember, potassium helps regulate blood pressure, fights bone loss and reduces your risk of kidney stones.

2 – Brown Rice
The difference between white rice and brown rice is not the color. White rice is brown rice AFTER it has been processed and devalued. Unlike white rice, brown rice is a true whole grain – because it still has the bran and germ of the natural grain. So you get the true ‘whole grain’ benefits – and about 10 times as much body-benefiting potassium and phosphorus.

3 – Bran
Either as cold cereal or hot cereal – bran kicks butt (I love oat bran cooked in water for breakfast [around 11:30am] with a medium banana, and 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed).

What do you get? A very nice dose of fiber, magnesium – and some VERY good quality carbohydrates.

4 – Brussel(s) Sprouts
Just 4 of these natural powerhouses gives you about 240 micrograms of vitamin K – which is twice the measly amount the average person gets in a full day. And trust me – you NEED vitamin K.

5 – Beef (Eye of Round is good)
Red meat is not evil – unless you are eating half a pound every day…

A 3 ounce serving of high quality beef gives you a body toning and strengthening dose of protein – at only 160 calories.

What else do you get from ‘the beef’? Zinc and vitamin B6 – two more essential elements you need to function optimally

6 – Broccoli
Yes – its STILL good for you… – As one of the top ‘dark green vegetables’ – you want to find a way to get this on your dinner table a few times a week if you are interested in reducing your chances of getting cancer – just to name a few…

7 – Blueberries
..VERY high in antioxidants …boost your brain function …helps lower cholesterol …loaded with vitamin K …may help prevent osteoporosis …prevents hardening of the arteries …loaded with fiber …should I keep going?

8 – Barley
Pearl barley has the outer husk removed – so DON’T eat it. You want WHOLE GRAIN barley – which still has the valuable husk. We all know the benefits of true whole grains – so no need for me to rehash here. You can also try bulgar or buckwheat groats (kasha) – as they are also nutrient packed whole grains.

Tooth Wear Is Caused By Healthy Foods!

February 26th, 2011

Introduction

The outermost part of a tooth is the enamel and this covers the softer parts of the tooth like an egg shell thereby protecting the internal parts of the tooth from any damage. The enamel is capable of withstanding the rough use of biting, chewing, crunching etc. provided you maintain a good oral hygiene. However, acids from foods and bacteria can erode the enamel thereby causing cavities.

Types of tooth wear

Many people exhibit different forms of wear to their dentition and these are as follows.

  • Abfraction – is the loss of tooth structure from flexural forces.
  • Abrasion – is the loss of tooth structure that occurs because of mechanical contact with external objects frequently.
  • Attrition – is the loss of the structure of the tooth because of tooth-to-tooth contact.
  • Corrosion/ Erosion – is the phenomenon of physical deterioration of any material including teeth because of any chemical or electro chemical action whereas erosion is the abrasive destruction of a material when liquid or gas passes over their surface The saliva in your mouth has calcium that helps in strengthening and re-mineralizing the teeth. If the acid in your mouth is large this re-mineralization cannot take place. The acids in the foods dissolve the mineral structure of teeth that causes damage to tooth enamel thereby thinning the teeth. Repeated such exposures to acid will change the shape and color of your tooth. As the damage continues, the inner layer of the tooth – dentin – gets exposed causing the teeth to look yellow. The children nowadays consume more acidic drinks and sodas thereby increasing the incidence of erosion of tooth enamel. The bottled water does not contain fluorides and people drink more of bottled water than tap water that contains protective fluoride.

The wear can occur either alone on their own or in combination with others. The lifestyle nowadays is hectic that leads to various habits which in turn are responsible for causing these problems.

Causes

The reasons for wearing of tooth are as under.

  • Consumption of acidic foods and beverages – soft drinks, pure fruit juices and high energy drinks, yogurt, lemon etc. are highly acidic and could cause erosion of your tooth although they appear harmless. Wine is another food item that could stain your teeth and also damage your tooth surface.
  • Medical factors – gastrointestinal conditions, acid reflux disease and the eating disorder bulimia decrease the saliva flow that causes tooth wear out.
  • Consuming foods with low pH – pickles, fruit juices, honey, fresh yogurt and raisins -cause tooth erosion.
  • Dry mouth – causes the acids to remain in your mouth for a longer period thereby causing more damage to your tooth surface.
  • Bruxism/ Teeth grinding – causes enamel wear-out.
  • Abrasion – using your teeth for opening bottles, packages or any other item will cause cracking or chipping of your tooth enamel. Other actions like chewing pens and pencils, biting finger nails, thread biting, toothpicks etc. could cause tooth wear.

Symptoms

The symptoms of tooth erosion are – tooth discoloration, tooth sensitivity, rounded teeth, transparent or sand blasted appearance, tooth cracking and dents are some of the symptoms of tooth wear.

Prevention

Your teeth could get severely damaged because of tooth wear and this can be prevented by taking the following measures.

  • Neutralize the acid – by rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water after consuming foods.
  • Allow for re-mineralization – by brushing your teeth after taking acidic foods.
  • Reduce carbonated drinks consumption – and replace them with milk, water, or sugarless coffee and tea.
  • Drink acidic liquids fast
  • Chew sugar-free chewing-gum – reduces dry mouth and increases the saliva flow.
  • Use soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste – fluoride reduces the sensitivity of your tooth.
  • Take some milk or cheese after meal – this will help in neutralizing the acids.
  • Improve your dental hygiene – by brushing and flossing properly.

Food and Halitosis

February 26th, 2011

Everybody occasionally perceives a relationship between food and halitosis: some foods just seem to stay on the breath long after they’ve been eaten and not always in a pleasant way: garlic, onions, curry dishes, strong cheeses, coffee, and alcohol are all common examples. Some of these foods, like garlic, hang around because of certain compounds they contain; others just have a strong smell and tend to linger while we digest them unless we take special measures. Other foods, however, impact the breath in more complicated ways.

In a broader sense, foods that cause halitosis potentially include high protein foods, sweet foods, and acidic foods-and it has nothing to do with the way they smell. In all cases, the connection is that the substance either provides food for the oral bacteria that produce bad breath, or it provides an environment that makes it easy for those bacteria to live and reproduce. For some people, the relationship between a certain food and halitosis may be so strong that it’s better to avoid that food altogether.

Protein foods include eggs, dairy products, red meat, poultry products, fish and seafood, nuts, dried beans, and a few others. Among these, the dairy products are notorious for causing bad breath, while beef, chicken, and fish are sometimes suspected as well. The association between other types of protein food and halitosis is not as strong so it might be wise to lean towards these other choices. Remember that the foods that cause halitosis may well be different for different people, so finding the culprit may be case of trial and error.

Sugar is a simpler matter. Sweet foods that cause halitosis usually contain glucose or another sugar, which provides food energy to bacteria just as it does to humans. We all know that sugar is a problem for healthy teeth; it’s also a problem for healthy breath, weight control, blood sugar levels and other health issues. It’s just better to avoid it as much as possible. If you must indulge in sweet food and halitosis is a concern, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth as soon as possible and/or investigate artificial sweeteners (artificial sweeteners have health concerns too, so make informed choices).

Acid food and halitosis goes together because the oral bacteria that produce breath odors thrive in an acid environment. Increasing the acidity of your mouth by taking in acid foods or liquids can encourage bacteria to multiply, thereby increasing the odor. Coffee, tomato juice, citrus juices, and pineapple juice are all recognized as potential foods that cause halitosis. It’s a shame, because people tend to like acid food and beverages, while neutral and alkaline foods have a tendency to taste bland. Again, if you can’t give up acid foods, practice regular and careful oral hygiene so that the pH of your mouth can return to normal quickly after eating and drinking.

Starting Off in Our Food and Beverage Industry

February 24th, 2011

The Food and Beverage industry is highly regarded as the most booming business of all time. It is not impossible though because staple products are one of the basic necessities of each individual. It is overwhelming for us, consumers, that many restaurant owners and fast food chains of today get their businesses involved in green projects and other ecological practices like using biodegradable utensils and disposable food containers.

You surely have seen couple of food chains that cater these kinds of products such as take out boxes, cutlery sets, disposable plates and others. By using these kinds of food containers, they got to serve their customers in a fast and easy manner. No more washing of the dishes, no more broken plates and other kitchen mishaps because plastic cutleries are made to be sturdy, damage free and most of all disposable. However, many classy restaurants are having second thoughts when it comes to using disposable plates and other plastic cutlery. They fear that customers won’t appreciate it if they will provide plain and boring utensils when they offer sophisticated food and stylish restaurant ambiance.

But actually they shouldn’t have. There are number of suppliers that cater these products in different style and approach, depending on the customer’s requirements. Not only that, most of them are proven safe and healthy to our environment.

How to Lower Hypertension With Healthy Food Selections

February 24th, 2011

Hypertension is considered such a dangerous disease simply because of its clandestine nature: it sneaks up on the individual who may never be aware that he or she has high blood pressure until they have an annual checkup with the physician. High blood pressure can result in a heart attack, stroke, and in extreme cases can result in death. Hypertension is an issue that can be controlled, however, through positive lifestyle changes and food selections. If you want to lower blood pressure with some all natural remedies, here are some superlative food choices that can help you do just that.

Consume some foods containing Garlic if you are looking to reduce hypertension; research has shown that Garlic, a small onion variant, has been proven to act as a blood thinner much as aspirin behaves. The main ingredient in Garlic that works in alleviating hypertension is adenosine, which aids in the dilation of blood vessels and relaxes one’s muscles. It is recommended that individuals with high blood pressure consume three to four Garlic cloves each day: the cloves can be easily swallowed down with a fresh glass of water. For those individuals who cannot stomach the idea of swallowing fresh Garlic cloves, there are Garlic oil capsules available on the market for little expense that will provide the same hypertension reduction benefits. Individuals interested in consuming garlic to battle high blood pressure however, are first advised to speak with a physician before doing so; some studies reveal that Garlic can interact with certain medications like saquinavirs, warfarin, and antiplatelets. Those individuals implementing this remedy also need to be wary of the natural side-effects produced by Garlic consumption which include halitosis.

Looking to lower blood pressure via tasty treats; then it’s time to pick up some fresh bananas. Bananas are tremendously high in potassium levels and lowered levels of potassium have been correlated with hypertension. If you aren’t fond of bananas, you have some splendid, high potassium containing food choices to select from; you can add watermelon and/or fresh oranges to your diet, or you can throw in a sampling of almonds each day if you so desire. You can also incorporate potassium enriched food choices into your main meal selections and have meals with a side of potatoes or a side of tomatoes and spinach as well.

A tried and true tradition for alleviating high blood pressure issues is to partake of a diet that is as near absent of salt products as possible. Salt is associated with elevated blood pressure levels so, if consumed, it should be eaten in the smallest amounts feasible. Recent studies have also revealed that many individuals that develop issues with high blood pressure mainly have to eliminate salt from their diet in order to return blood pressure to healthy levels: these individuals wind up never having to partake of hypertension medications whatsoever. On the same token, for those seeking hypertension reduction foods and beverages, it’s a good idea for one to refrain from beverages and food that contain caffeine too.

Weight Loss & Health Foods – A Doctor’s View That “Healthy” Foods May Not Help Weight Loss

February 20th, 2011

Fresh fruit juices, bananas, nuts, sports & energy drinks, cranberry juice, and oat bran can make you fat and certainly do not help you lose weight and become really “healthy. Using some foods as medicines often distracts peoples attention from the correct treatment. Beware of foods labeled, “Healthy” or “Good for You.”

They may not be so good for your waist line.

Food and beverages used to treat mild medical problems may be a source of hidden calories that cause you to pack on the pounds without much positive gain. Foods such as bananas, cranberry juice, and oat bran when eaten daily may be responsible for a hundred or more excess calories a day. So called “health” foods including nuts and olive oil are another source of hidden calories as are drinks like Gatorade and energy drinks both of which are loaded with sugar. Here are the actual foods and drinks associated with these potential extra calories:

Orange Juice used to prevent or treat colds:
Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling advocated large doses of Vitamin C to prevent and treat upper respiratory infections beginning in 1970′s. The Cochrane review of “placebo-controlled trials involving 11,350 participants pointed out that regular ingestion of vitamin C has no effect on common cold incidence in the ordinary population. The authors go on to say, trials of high doses of vitamin C administered therapeutically (starting after the onset of symptoms), showed no consistent effect on either duration or severity of symptoms…” Our daily Vitamin C requirement in between 60-100 mg.per day which is easily supplied in a normal diet. Vitamin C in a supplement ranges from 100 t0 1000 mg. Each tablet contains less than 2 calories.

Cranberry Juice for the treatment of urinary tract infections:
Dr Franklin C. Lowe, professor or urology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons reviewed the treatment of urological problems with cranberry juice and other “natural” remedies in May 2006:
He noted, “Cranberry products are widely believed to be effective treatments of urinary tract infections. The results of 2 controlled studies found that cranberry juice does not treat urinary infections and may increase kidney stones.”

Bananas for “low potassium:”
Potassium is important for good health and a balanced diet supplies all he potassium one needs. There is no evidence that potassium supplements are useful in the treatment of high blood pressure and are only needed for people who have low potassium due to illness or treatment with certain medications. Non athletes and people in good health do not need potassium supplements. Eating a banana supplies 350 mg. of potassium, which is about 1/6 of the possible potassium needs in a day? There is no “recommended daily allowance for potassium” since lack of potassium is so rare. The problem is that a single banana has 110 calories and 12 grams of sugar; eaten daily it can cause a weight gain of 10 lbs. in a year. There are other fruits that have less sugar and many less calories. If additional potassium is really needed, consider a potassium tablet which has 750 mg or more of potassium and zero calories.

Oat bran and barley for treatment of elevated cholesterol:
Oat bran in the form of beta-glucan can lower cholesterol. However, few people consider how effective it really is and the caloric consequences. It takes three cup of cheerios to obtain the 3 grams of beta glucan fiber the amount to end up with the 3 grams of beta glucan a day that is required to lower cholesterol Three cups of cheerios or oatmeal with fat free milk contain 450 calories. It may lower cholesterol by 7%. That means someone with blood cholesterol of 275 mg% might lower his cholesterol to 251 mg% percent, if he is lucky. This is not enough of change when the desirable level is less than 200mg%. It also means that the individual must take the oat bran every day, indefinitely, not an easy task. In one study where workers at a factory making oat products were offered free oatmeal for breakfast and free oat muffins at lunch few were able to eat them for more than a month or two. Another important issue for many people seeking “natural” cures is the misconception that all they need to do is to eat their oat bran and their cholesterol will acceptable. A popular ad says, “lowers your cholesterol by up to 7% in 6 weeks.” Does that mean that after 6 weeks they can stop the oat bran?

What’s the weight gain with this much oat bran? 420 calories excess calories a day translates into 40 lbs. weight gain in a year. Obviously, the oat bran would replace another food. Assuming the breakfast was 2 eggs and a piece of toast which contains 180 calories, the actual excess calories might be only 220 calories or 22 lbs. in a year. Take the issue one step further, 22 lbs. weight gain can result in 2 or 3 inch increase in waist circumference, which translates into a 20% increase in cholesterol and 17% increase in overall mortality from cardiovascular disease. There are far better ways to lower cholesterol.

Food Supplements Gatorade, Energy Drinks, Nuts and Seeds
These “health” foods and drinks are all have serious portion control and more than 100 calories per portion.
Nuts may have “healthy oils”, but the usual portion of almonds is 170 calories and contains only 6 grams of protein. If consumed daily that results in weight gain of more than 17 lbs. over a year. Sports drinks like
Gatorade contain 50 calories per portion. However, most bottles have 2 or 3 portions. A serving of sugar rich
gatorade can easily be 150 calories and add 15 lbs. a year if consumed daily.

How Food and Beverage Consultants Can Help You Run Your Business

February 18th, 2011

If done correctly the food service business can be quite lucrative. Apart from the large restaurant chains, well run independent restaurant businesses can be very profitable. President Obama’s pledge to help small business in the United States has encouraged many entrepreneurs to open their own restaurants. This is one reason why the restaurant industry continues to grow year after year.

Driving this year to year demand within the restaurant industry is the need for home meal replacement. With more and more home owners and married couples busy working two jobs, they have sought meal options outside their homes. With both parents working full time they do not have enough time to cook for themselves. Naturally the demand for home meal replacement continues to increase.

Secondly, as the world becomes a smaller place and people of different ethnic origins diverge, people grow increasingly eager to sample foods and cuisines from different parts of the world. This has increased the demand for authentic exotic dishes from all parts of the globe. It has also increased the demand for dishes with big flavors.

St the same time people have also become interested in eating organic, natural and healthful foods. And as seen in some of the popular grocery stores, people are willing to pay a premium for full flavored and healthy dishes. Previous to these trends few people were concerned about the nutritional information of what they ate. For many restaurateurs, serving healthy, organic and natural foods is an excellent way to reach health conscious consumers who look for traditional dishes with ingredients that are considered to be healthy.

Thus the catering industry is going grow in the future. If you want to reap the rich dividends that this field offers, you may get in touch with food and beverage consultant.

Food service consultants can guide you towards the appropriate restaurant segments of the market you ought to target. Like all other businesses, a well chalked-out strategy will enable you to be aware of the challenges that you may face and deal with them swiftly. Food and beverage consultants have the expertise to assist you in creating a plan that meets your precise needs. Food and beverage consulting firms can tell you how to conduct market research for best results.

Before you start your business, you should also have a marketing and promotion plan. If you concentrate merely on cooking well and not on branding and advertising your products, customers will not know about you and you will be killed by competition. Food service consultants will also be able to help you to come up with new products on a regular basis, so that your loyal customers do have to go elsewhere when they want to try something out of the ordinary.

Get Stronger With Healthy Food And Have A Body You Can Be Proud Of

February 16th, 2011

A healthy food regime consists of good nutritional diet that supplements the basic need of body. It supplies the appropriate amount of energy and sufficient raw materials to keep the body healthy. It also provides anti-oxidants that make people feel young and be proud of looking great. Having fair idea of why the body requires healthy food, the next thing is to know more about healthy food and eating methods of healthy food, in order to attain stronger body.

Healthy Food for Stronger Body:

Food in natural state: The food helps to build stronger body. Fresh fruits, apples and berries are good for satisfying the desire for sweets. Vegetables of all kinds such a green, yellow and orange are rich in vitamins and minerals. Steamed vegetables retain the nutritional value of the vegetables. Avoid calorie rich sauces and fats. High calorie foods are not good for health.

Fish, Chicken and Meat: To attain a stronger body, serve seafood two or three times a week. Ocean fish consists of essential fatty acids that are usually deficient in the healthy diet. Prefer baked chicken and fish rather than fried ones. The lean meat such as venison or bison is healthier than beef, which is rich in fat.

Processed bacon, lunchmeat, sausages and hot dogs contain plenty of junk, which the body does not require. Even if anybody wants to have such meats, then probably they can go for healthier versions that are available at health food departments.

Avoid Non-nutritional food: White bread and noodles are made of flour that is not good for health. The flour does not contain nutritional content. Moreover, the high starch content of white bread affects the sugar level of the blood quicker than a regular sugar. In addition, sugary pastries and snacks, apple pie are non-nutritional items, which are not good for health. It is essential that pasta or baked items have to be made from whole grains.

Benefits of Variety in Food & Water:

Some people are very much sensitive to frequently eaten food. Therefore, such people have to break the habit and start eating a variety in food to achieve stronger body. Consume various kinds of grains. Spelt is a better substitute for wheat. Prefer to have almond or rice milk rather than cow’s milk. People have to eat variety of food even if they do not like it.

Drink plenty of water and limit beverages such as soft drinks. If individuals are tired of drinking plain water, add some lime or lemon slice to it. Serve kids with some fruit juice with carbonated water. Even green and herbal tea can be good substitute for water. However, avoid excess of caffeine.

Avoid Skipping Meals:

Skipping breakfast brings down the energy level by midmorning. It is better to split the breakfast in half than skipping it. It helps greatly by eating breakfast early such as oatmeal, egg or whole grain bread. Snacks such as almonds and raisins also benefit the health greatly. The split breakfast provides better solution than going for candy bars or coffee, and retains the energy level to feel good and fresh.
